Elk Valley, located in British Columbia, is a mountainous region known for its dense forests and clear rivers. The area serves as a vital corridor for species movement through the Canadian Rockies. Unfortunately, it is also a hotspot for wildlife collisions along the busy Highway 3. Collaborative conservation efforts, such as the Reconnecting the Rockies program and other initiatives, continue to improve safety for both people and animals. However, decaying animal carcasses resulting from wildlife collisions often attract more wildlife, leading to further incidents. To address this, three fenced disposal sites have been established along the highway. These secure sites contribute to more sustainable waste management, while electric fencing prevents large carnivores from accessing the carcasses inside.
The fencing is designed to deter large mammals from going over or under it. An additional outrigging system makes climbing impossible and creates visual depth confusion, discouraging ungulates from approaching the fence line.
Follow us on MargoTV to see how we’ve built these electric fences to help reduce roadside wildlife collisions in Elk Valley.
