Electric fencing is an effective solution to control animal movement in a specified area. We want you to understand how electric fencing works so you can create an effective system.
Electric fencing is an incredibly useful tool for a variety of wildlife conflicts, however, it can be quite confusing for beginners.
Measure the area you are fencing, include the number of corners and gates. For very large projects, the fence area may require multiple energizers to power the fence in sections
How long your fence will be used? Temporary or seasonal fences may require less heavy-duty materials
The type of soil determines the type of posts and grounding that you will need
Materials like wire, posts and energizer are dependent on the type of animal you are trying to manage
1. Energizer
The type of energizer you choose will depend on the site’s access to electricity. There are two types of energizers, solar energizer and main/battery energizer.
If your site can access electricity through an outlet, a main/battery energizer is recommended (be sure to protect your fence from outages by using a surge protector).
If you cannot access an outlet for your fence, solar energizers are the solution.

2. Wire
The wire carries the electricity from the energizer throughout the fence.
The wire is what delivers a shock to the animal when it is grounded and makes contact.

3. Posts
Like any fence, a post is used to provide structure. On an electric fence, posts are also used to mount wire – through the use of insulators.
Posts can be made of a variety of different materials, from wood to fiberglass to steel. We offer fiberglass fence posts, which are durable and act as an insulator, removing the need to buy insulators for fences built with these posts. Very easy to install by hand.
The duration of a fence, soil type and target animal will determine which fence post is the best choice for your job.

4. Insulators
Insulators are a type of fencing hardware that allows you to attach the wire to the post.
Insulators are required to ensure that all of the electricity coming from the energizer is available to deliver a shock to anything that makes contact with the fence wire.
Without proper insulation of the wires, a fence can short – meaning that it will be less effective in deterring animals. Insulators are made for the specific type of post that they are insulating.

5. Grounding
Electric fencing requires grounding to close the circuit when something makes contact with the wire.
Grounding can be achieved through a ground rod or ground plate – attaching the wire with a ground rod clamp.

It is important to consider multiple factors when planning your electric fence. Many of the materials depend on the site, so it is a good idea to think about these before you purchase fencing materials. We have outlined some of the considerations below to help you begin a new fencing project.
* Remember that when you implement a fence, it is important to be thoughtful as an ill-prepared fence may teach animals how to exploit it in the future. Doing it right the first time, alleviates future problems and expenses. *

Since the inception of Margo Supplies in 1980, we have been contracted to implement many large-scale electric fencing projects. We take the time and care necessary to ensure that every fence we install is as effective as possible. This includes training staff and property owners on the maintenance and safety around the fence and providing custom site documents to ensure the longevity of the project.

An electric fence works by creating an electrical circuit when an animal or person touches the wire. The electricity flows through the body to the ground, completing the circuit and delivering a shock.
Electric fences are generally safe when installed and maintained properly. The shocks are designed to be a deterrent, not to cause harm. However, care should be taken to ensure children and vulnerable individuals are aware of the fence.
Electric fences can be used to control a wide range of animals, including livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs), horses, wildlife (bear, elk, deer, coyotes and more.)
Yes. However, there are a variety of factors to take into account when setting up your own fence. An improperly set up fence can teach animals how to exploit the system in the future. Contact info@margosupplies.com for help with information regarding setting up electric fencing.
Yes. You can add electric fencing to pre-existing fencing such as wood or chainlink. The type of insulators will be different depending on what your base fence is constructed from.
Electric fencing is a cost effective animal deterrent. Power consumption is generally low especially if the fence is solar-powered.
