What is Bear Spray?
Bear spray works by using a pepper ingredient called “capsaicin” which causes an immediate and involuntary shutdown of the animal’s functions and prevents the completion of a charge. Bear Spray is non-toxic and does not cause any lasting harm to the animal. It is a safer and more effective option for protection, while ultimately protecting bear populations as well. Always have your bear spray in reach. Consider using a holster to avoid unwanted deployment.
Timing
Bear spray should be readied at the sight of a bear. This means removing your bear spray from your holster and having it in your hand.
Distance
Safety should be removed and ready to use when about 30m (100ft) away from the bear.
Training with Inert Bear Spray
A big part of being prepared with bear spray is knowing how it sprays. We offer an inert version of our Bear Shield spray that has the pepper contents removed so that users can practice using bear spray without potentially getting a face full of capsaicin. Many people carry bear spray without knowing how it actually looks when deployed, it is important to be familiar with the product to have maximum efficiency in an emergency situation.
